Otoliths
Otoliths (the sagittae) are often used for fish aging. They can also be used for species identification due to their unique shape and size for a given species and are resistant to digestion relative to external morphology. The otoliths used for photography were mainly provided by the Marine Mammal Lab at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
