Beaks and Radula

Cephalopods are important dietary component of some marine fish and marine mammals. They have upper and lower beaks however the lower beak is usually used for identification. The radula of cephalopods are also used for distinguishing different species. Beaks and radula are resistant to digestion and are often times the last remaining part of a cephalopod in a stomach. The beaks and radula used for photography were mainly provided by the Marine Mammal Lab at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
